Session Description
Mountain environments, with their ecological sensitivity and a long history of human occupation provide exceptional archives for studying human-environment interactions. Natural and anthropogenic deposits in these regions offer insights into land-use patterns and socio-ecological adaptations. Yet, disentangling and interpreting anthropogenic signatures remain methodologically challenging in these regions due to the complex interplay between natural and anthropogenic processes. This session invites contributions advancing the identification and analysis of anthropogenic markers in mountain environments across diverse geographical regions and cultural contexts. We welcome approaches that incorporate palynology, non-pollen palynomorphs, zooarchaeology, micromorphology, organic/inorganic geochemistry and biomolecular techniques (aDNA, biomarkers). By integrating archaeological, environmental and interdisciplinary approaches, this session aims to explore how human societies altered mountain environments.
