Session Description

This season invites abstracts from the domain of stable non-traditional isotopes—including isotopes of lithium, boron, magnesium, calcium, iron, molybdenum, copper, zinc, and others—that are transforming our understanding of Earth system processes of the present and the past. While traditional isotopes like carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen have long been used in geoscience research, non-traditional isotopes are now providing critical insights into biogeochemical cycles, fluid-rock interactions, weathering, redox processes, and past climate reconstruction across diverse Earth environments. Through a series of lectures, workshops, and hands-on sessions, this section aims to highlight: (i) theoretical frameworks and analytical advances (e.g., MC-ICPMS, TIMS) on the high-precision isotope ratio measurement front, (ii) case studies from marine sediments, ice cores, rivers, soils, and hydrothermal systems, (iii) applications in paleoenvironmental reconstructions, ocean chemistry, pollution tracing, and climate change studies. Interdisciplinary approaches combining geochemistry, oceanography, and environmental science, (iii) methodological challenges, data interpretation, and modeling frameworks. This season is designed for early-career researchers, students, and professionals in the Earth, ocean, and environmental sciences who seek to expand their toolkit with the powerful lens of non-traditional isotopes.
