This four-day excursion provides an integrated perspective on reading landscape histories from fluvial sediments and landforms to discern Earth's changing environment. Participants shall examine diverse landscapes across the Rarh Bengal region of the Western Bengal Basin and explore its remarkable Quaternary archives and archaeological remnants. Representative locations along the Dulung, Kansabati, Silabati, and Barakar rivers shall reveal the dynamic juxtaposition of fluvial sediments preserved in river terraces, palaeoflood signatures, tephra deposits, weathering variations in lateritic gullied geomorphosites and Stone Age tools in Neolithic sites. Participants will analyse and map sediments, stratigraphic sequences and geomorphic features in their natural settings, and undertake field-based granulometric measurements, complemented by available luminescence ages that provide a temporal framework for the Quaternary environmental changes in this region.
