Session Description
Advancing paleoscience in underrepresented regions, particularly those in the global south, is crucial for understanding past socio-environmental systems and their impact on contemporary challenges. This includes promoting the collection and analysis of data from regions considered part of the global south, where a rich history of interactions between humans and their environment exists but is often overlooked in global paleoscience research. The Global South is gaining significant attention, faces interconnected crises like climate change, food insecurity, debt, and conflict, disproportionately impacting its populations. These crises are exacerbated by global economic and political inequalities, making it difficult for global south countries to address their challenges effectively. Addressing these issues requires a collaborative effort from the international community, including debt relief, sustainable development investments, and climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. It also requires addressing structural inequalities and ensuring the Global South has a stronger voice in global decision-making. In this session we seek contributions that use a combined, inclusive approach to understand and address the challenges facing the global south, focusing on root causes and sustainable solutions. This involves bringing together different disciplines and perspectives to identify the complex issues and develop solutions that are appropriate for the specific contexts of the Global South.
