Session Description
Understanding rock weathering to produce regolith and its subsequent erosion is essential to decipher Earth surface evolution and element fluxes. Yet, unravelling the interplay between tectonics and climate in shaping landforms and driving mass transfers from active orogens remains a critical challenge.
This session explores the dynamic coupling of weathering and erosion (if any), and influence of climate and tectonic on landscapes and the linked sediment conveyor belt/s from source to sink. The topics may include: (a) Quantitative estimates using cosmogenic nuclides, U-series isotopes, or other proxies, (b) Field, experimental, and modelling approaches, (c) Tectonic-climate-biosphere interactions, (d) Case studies from varied climates with special emphasis on high-relief landscapes, (e) Landscape evolution across timescales, and (f) Carbon cycling, sediment generation, and critical zone development. With an interdisciplinary approach, the session looks for a comprehensive understanding of Earth surface dynamics, from rock to regolith and beyond.
