Session Description
Since the last glaciation, the continental shelf has undergone profound environmental transformations. Rising sea levels submerged vast areas of land, including regions once inhabited by early human populations and Pleistocene fauna. This session invites contributions from marine geology, prehistoric archaeology, palynology, palaeoanthropology, and related Quaternary sciences, aiming to reconstruct submerged landscapes and study the possible preservation of prehistoric archaeological sites on continental shelves since the Last Glacial Maximum. We welcome research on palaeogeographic and relative sea-level reconstructions, as well as studies of flora and fauna associated with these landscapes. Submissions employing multi-proxy approaches—integrating diverse disciplines and novel technologies—are particularly encouraged. This session also highlights the need to preserve key features of submerged landscapes, which face increasing threats from commercial development and natural geological processes.
