Session Description

Tephrochronology is an established chronostratigraphic method in Quaternary science, with common applications in correlating and dating palaeoenvironmental sequences (marine, terrestrial sediments, ice), archaeological stratigraphies and volcanic records. As well as having multi-disciplinary applications, tephrochronology relies on the collaboration and contributions of experts across disciplines, to date, chemically characterise, trace, and model the pathway of a tephra layer from eruption to burial. Well-characterised and dated volcanic ash (tephra and cryptotephra) layers may be traced 100s-1000s of kilometres away from their eruptive source, contributing to interconnected regional tephrostratigraphic frameworks. This session, partnered with the IAVCEI Commission on Tephrochronology, invites contributions demonstrating multidisciplinary applications of Quaternary tephrochronology, as well as studies that advance methodologies for dating and characterising volcanic ash layers.
