Session Description
Lake sediments represent sensitive archives of variable climate conditions, occurring in both the lake catchment and the water column. Closed lakes (e.g. crater or maar lakes) are very sensitive to climate variability with a hydrological balance controlled by precipitation and evaporation. During humid intervals, stronger precipitations enhance physical weathering of the lake margins and surface runoff leading to higher detrital flux registered into the sediment column. On the contrary, drier intervals favor the precipitation of endogenic minerals during periods of lower lake levels. Moreover, lakes have the potential to accumulate high-resolution records of environmental variability induced by natural climate changes over the Quaternary as well as abrupt changes eventually induced by human activities. This session invites any contribution discussing natural or human imprints in the lacustrine sedimentary record.
