Session Description
Floodplains are global hotspots of sensitive socio-environmental changes, exceptionally dynamic landscapes, and key areas of cultural and natural heritage. Due to their high land-use capacity and the simultaneous necessity of land reclamation and risk minimisation, societies have radically restructured floodplains. The session focuses on pre-industrial floodplains and the fluvial societies that operated there and aims to answer the questions of when and why humans became a significant controlling factor in floodplain formation and how humans in interaction with natural processes modified floodplains. Session contributions are highly welcome that consider medieval and pre-industrial time scales. Earlier and later dimensions may be added in order to identify, quantify and assess anthropogenic changes towards a Fluvial Anthroposphere. Session contributions should ideally base upon the systematic overlay of geoscientific, archaeological, and/or historical data and research approaches.
