Session Description

Soil micromorphology provides critical microscopic insights into sedimentary processes, site formation, and human-environment interactions, establishing it as a powerful tool in Quaternary research. This session seeks to explore cutting edge approaches that integrate micromorphology with complementary techniques, including geochemistry, isotopes, palynology, biomolecular analysis and geochronology to reconstruct past environment and cultural dynamics. We invite case studies from diverse contexts like palaeosols, slope deposits, cave infills, and anthropogenic layers that demonstrate how these multi-proxy approaches refine stratigraphic models, improve proxy calibration, and offer deep insights into subsistence strategies and human adaptation. By fostering methodological innovation and promoting interdisciplinary collaborations across geoarchaeology, geology, soil science and environmental archaeology, this session aims to underscore micromorphology’s pivotal role in bridging micro-scale evidence to broader questions in Quaternary research.
