The Marginal Gangetic Plain, the southernmost segment of the Ganga Plain, was shaped by the flexing of the Indian lithosphere due to thrust-fold stress from the Himalayan Orogen. While significant attention has been given to major Himalayan-fed rivers such as the Ganga, Yamuna, Kosi, and Ghagra, the tributaries draining from the peripheral bulge of the foreland basin remain less studied, despite bearing evidence of seismic activity in the cratonic basement.   One such river, the Belan, is a tributary of the Tons River and a sub-tributary of the Ganga, flowing through the Marginal Gangetic Plain. The Belan River Basin exhibits several tectonically influenced geomorphic features, including fluvial incision, river migration, and gorge formation. Notably, the region is renowned for its prehistoric sites, particularly from the Neolithic period. The sites of Chopanimando, known for pottery-making, and Koldihwa, associated with early rice cultivation, are significant archaeological discoveries. Both sites, located in the Prayagraj district along the northern fringes of the Vindhyas, lie on the banks of the Belan River.
